Lerner was accepted to the universities of Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, and Duke.

After a year at Dartmouth college as a starter on the varsity soccer team, Lerner decided he wanted to play at Duke University.

He was a member of Duke’s first national championship team that won the 1986 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Tournament.
