Solly Mapaila was born on the 19^th June 1969 in Thokoza township, an African suburban confluence 25 kilo meters South East of Johannesburg.

He is born of a Christian working class family that worked in the sprawling industrial area of Eastern ​Johannesburg. His father was a factory workers and his mother worked in the catering industry. They are both deceased.

After matriculating he skipped (left into exile) the country to join the then underground liberation movement the ANC where he was enlisted in its military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe – MK (the spear of the nation).

After completing his basic guerilla warfare, he studied military science at the Dr. Hugo Nkabinde Military Training College in Uganda. He also became a military instructor and rose in the ranks of the army and became a commissar. He came back to South Africa in September 1994 for integration programme of all armed forces into the newly established single South African National Defence Force.
